IB Mathematics
In IB you can choose from one of the free levels of math: higher level, standard level math studies, in other words you can choose from: no personal life, very little personal life or very little intelligent life. (jokes on them kids, us studies students live the good life)
Unfortunately math is compulsory, luckily there is very little math in math studies (yeah no studies still sucks if you don't like math). Below there is a description of all the three levels of math and some useful tips and links.
Higher Level Mathematics
IB-students are often intimidated even by thethought of higher level mathematics. Higher level is thought to be humanly impossible and no sensible IB-student would never even consider studying it. As an higher level mathematics student I can tell you they are completely wrong. Higher level math is much....
... much worse.
Why study HL math?
-If you are one of those rare people, who enjoy mathematics and you feel that mathematics has always been easy to you, you might even enjoy the challenge. It will require work, but higher level mathematics is developing and can be rewarding at times. Nothing beats the feeling, when you get the right answer, from a calculation that took you 1, 5 pages. Yes, A4-size pages. No, not the small ones.
-You will win every argument, ever. Just say some impressive sounding HL mathematics terminology, claim you are a HL math student and you will win. People actually think that you are smart.
-HL math syllabus is partly beyond the syllabus of a regular high school student, in uni or in entrance exams HL math will definitely help you.
-in Etis the class size of an HL class is usually quite small. This will aid you when you need help or you have some questions. In addition the HL math class mates become closer friends.
Studying HL Mathematics in Etis
Some tips and hints for studying HL mathematics:
- ALWAYS do your homework. Even if there is a lot of it, at least do part of it. The best way to fail HL mathematics, is to stop doing homework. Even if you forget do your homework once, do it after class, before the next one.
- Practice with some past paper question before the exam. Although the meme at thebeginning seems a bit of absurd, the HL exams are hard. So hard, you will want to cry in the silent class, when you are doing your exam. At least you can be prepared, if at least glance past papers before entering your exam.
- In the exam, if you cannot do one question just stop and skip it, and do it later if you have time. You have so little time, do not waste it trying to do harder questions in the beginning. You need to collect the easier marks first. When you complete the easier questions, return to the harder ones and give them a try, if you have time left.
- It might be a good idea to buy a revision book, they are not that expensive but will be extremely useful. In my revision book , I have summaries of each topic, them some questions on it and later on exam-style questions with worked-out solutions.
- Use your formula booklet while revising. While studying, constantly check whether you need to learn the formula or is it provided. There is no use in memorizing formulas that are provided to you, but there is some use to know where they are located n the formula booklet. Usually you will learn the locations of importantformulas, while practicing, so there no need in actually memorizing there locations either.
-If you are in Etis, you will probably use Pearson math book. I feel it is a relatively good book, although it is super heavy and has a lot of mistakes. It is easy to order form Amazon and when you receive the book, there is a code, which you can use to access the ebook, in Pearson etext. In the ebook, you have all the options, worked-out solutions for every question and you can access it with computer or tablet, so you do not have to carry the heavy book around.
Useful links and books:
-the revision book that I use, is:
Mathematics Higher Level for the IB Diploma: Exam Preparation Guide /Cambridge University Press

-I have lost my formula booklet, 3 or 4 times during my IB years, you can find a new formula booklet from this link in case you have lost it and you need to print a new one. It does not have the school stamp, but it is useful, when doing homework, revising and in small tests and exams. I have had a formula booklet without stamp during every exam week and no one has ever asked me to get a one with a stamp.

-if you are taking the calculus option, this book might also be useful. The option is also in Pearson book, but only in online version and it feel it is kind of unclear sometimes. This book clear examples and the question are really good.

Standard level mathematics
Standard level mathematics is a good option if you do not want kill yourself in higher level. If you are contemplating between studies and SL math. I would probably choose SL. Both are standard level subjects, so you can easily drop to studies, if you feel like standard level is too hard. And let´s face it, standard level might be too hard, it actually has many areas common with HL math.
Why study SL math:
-You have to study mathematics in IB and if you do not want your class mates to make endless math studies jokes about you, it is wise to choose standard level mathematics
-Many universities require either standard or higher level mathematics, before choosing, which level you want study, check what your dream university requires
Studying Standard level mathematics in Etis:
Some useful tips and hints for studying SL mathematics:
-Do your homework. It is the easiest way to fail IB mathematics, if you do not do your homework. You study new things with such a rapid phase that you will not learn enough unless you study at home as well and the easiest way to do that is actually do the homework, even though it sounds lame.
-If you are in Etis, you will probably use Pearson math book. I feel it is a relatively good book, although it is super heavy and has a lot of mistakes. It is easy to order form Amazon and when you receive the book, there is a code, which you can use to access the ebook, in Pearson etext. IB MATHEMATICAL STUDIES
Contrary to popular belief, which is demonstrated in the meme below (which was added by an HL student fyi), studies does require some intelligence as this is an IB subject and the IB would not let you get away so easily. Obviously, if you are better at maths it will seem, sometimes unbelievably, easier to you when compared to the SL or HL stuff.
- If you want to focus more on other subjects and math isn't your strongest one, studies is a good choice.
- If you actually want a life and not have to be worried about how much your math grade will bring down your points in the finals, studies is a good choice.
- If you don't like math and won'tneed a high level of math in your future studies, choose math studies.
